The Top Ten Ways to Avoid Getting Your Food Spit In

Some of you have had your food spit in. Many more of you have been the victims of unsafe food preparation practices. Virtually all of you have had your food mistreated. As a result you have all been exposed to potentially unsafe food and unsanitary eating conditions at some point in your life. This is the reality of the restaurant industry. Some of it is done very intentionally. Most of it is unintentional. I’ve seen it happen. I know it happens. Think about all the really unreasonable people you’ve met in your life. Now, keeping these really unreasonable people in mind, would you want really unreasonable people handling you’re food? I’m here to tell you that there are unreasonable, dirty, despicable, and just genuinely terrible people in this world and every time you go out to eat there is a fantastic chance one of the aforementioned people will be handling your food.

Spitting in people’s food is a horrible, horrible thing to do. In my opinion it stems from a sense of insignificance and helplessness. People who do it should be prosecuted. Spitting in someone’s food is a crime of power when your boil it down. People who spit in other people’s food satisfy some dark primal need to feel superior to their victims. It alleviates a feeling of insignificance the aggressor has internalized. Often times, spitters feel they have been injured in some way by the spitees. Many times, this perceived injustice is imagined or the server is simply being too sensitive. However, that does not make it any less of a reality. People get their food spit in every day. This begs the question: What can you do to prevent someone from spitting in your food?

Over the next few days, I will present to you my top ten ways to avoid getting your food spit in. This list will include several scenarios that, as a server for the better part of a decade, drove me crazy. Again, I’m not saying that the people who do these things deserve to have their food spit in. My point is that these ten scenarios drive some disturbed people to spit in your food.
